The Key to Good Health - Five Must Do's

We often take good health for granted, that is until we lose it! It's often only when something ails us that we are forced to consider good health, or the lack of it, with a bit more thought.

Good health, or wellness, is not just about an absence of illness or disease, rather it's an overall feeling of wellbeing that's made up of how we feel depending on what factors are impacting upon that feeling at any one point in our lives.

Now whilst we might not be able to control all of the factors that cause us to suffer dis-ease in our day to day lives there are a number of simple precautions that we as individuals should all take in order to minimize at least some of the risks that too many of us fail to recognize until it's too late.

If you can follow the Five must do's you'll be well on your way to maintaining your good health.

Five good health must do's are as follows;

* Stop Smoking

Smoking is the number one killer in western society today. It kills approximately 440,000 Americans every year, that's 1,205 a DAY.There's a myriad of websites offering advice that are available to those still smoking and we should all be working towards a smoke-free environment for all if the good health of all of us, smokers and non-smokers, is to be protected

* Eat well and exercise

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, "poor diet and physical inactivity" are now causing 400,000 deaths a year in the United States.

A simple mixed diet including a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day has been proven to help us stay healthy. Fruit and vegetables taste delicious and there's so much variety to choose from.

They're a good source of vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin C and potassium.They're an excellent source of dietary fibre, which helps maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestion problems. A diet high in fibre can also reduce your risk of bowel cancer.

They can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.

Fruit and vegetables contribute to a healthy and balanced diet.If you take even some light exercise daily, you'll help your body maintain good health and lessen the risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease.

* Drink less alcohol

After smoking and poor eating and exercise habits, the next biggest self-inflicted killer we continually ignore is the excessive drinking of alcohol. A recent US Government study suggested that excessive alcohol consumption kills some 75,000 Americans each year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which published the study, estimated that 34,833 people in 2001 died from cirrhosis of the liver, cancer and other diseases linked to drinking too much beer, wine and spirits.

Another 40,933 died from car crashes and other mishaps caused by excessive alcohol use.

We can enjoy a drink with no problems whatsoever providing we do it responsibly and we're aware of the dangers of over indulgence. Indeed there is evidence to suggest that light or moderate alcohol intake can actually be beneficial to our health.

* Don't get burned!

We all love the feeling of sunshine on our skin but beware, like many other things excess can be dangerous. Excessive exposure to strong sunlight can cause painful sunburn, sunstroke and may lead to more serious conditions such as skin cancers.

Always be aware of the UV index rating for your area and take appropriate precautions.

Proper use of sunscreens, appropriate clothing and sensible durations of exposure to the sun will allow all of us to enjoy the summer with none of the ill effects mentioned here.

* Be Happy!

Good health as I said at the beginning of this article is not just about avoiding or being aware of the physical dangers that are prevalent in our society; it's as much dependant on our mood, our outlook as anything else.

Are you a glass half-full or glass half-empty sort of person?

If we approach life with a positive attitude and (despite what I've written about today), we don't take ourselves too seriously, we can do wonders for our general feeling of wellbeing.

Sure, there'll be good days and bad days, some will be infinitely better than others but if we pay heed to the information above and if we approach each day with a feeling of excitement and relish, we'll be more than ready for life's challenges and good health will stand it's best chance of staying with us.

If you can follow all, or even most, of the five must do's for good health, you'll be doing yourself the biggest favor you could think of.

Most dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, milk etc are rich in calcium. Calcium is also good for women as it helps protect their bones and keep them strong for a longer period of time. Some sort of physical activity such as walk, cycling, exercise, and yoga also help to keep women active, energetic, and healthy over period of time. Moreover, exercise also helps in reduction of stress and anxiety problems in women. Students, housewives, and even working women should start their day with a healthy and big breakfast followed by a medium lunch and a relatively small dinner. Prefer taking lunch from home instead of eating out anything from your cafeteria. Make sure that what so ever you decide to eat is rich in nutrients and less in terms of caloric intake.Take time out for yourself each day to replenish and admire nature and blessings you are bestowed with. Live freely, and do what makes you happy at heart. Spend some quality time with your family and the people you love every day. Flossing your teeth daily is a good idea. Furthermore, prevent your teeth from all sorts of gum infections and brush them twice daily. Sleep is really important to keep yourself healthy and active. Irregular sleep routine results in slowing down the metabolism which may lead to weight gain in women. Furthermore, lack of sleep also disturbs the hormones in the body. It is very important to inculcate into the child's mind, the importance of a healthy breakfast. A wholesome breakfast provides your child energy for the physical and mental activities of the day.

Exercise

Eat junk food, but keep an eye on how much is eaten

It is a given fact that kids love fast food like burgers, pizzas, pastas, fries, pastries, cookies, ice-creams and chocolates. Parents should take care to see that children eat fast-foods but in a controlled quantity. Children should also be taught that too much of any food can prove injurious to their health. Teaching them to control their intake of such foods helps in the long run since they learn the value of self-control.

Drink lots of water

Drinking lots of water helps flush out toxins from the body. It also helps in the proper distribution of vitamins, proteins and minerals every system of the body. It helps in proper development of the body of the child. Many diseases like kidney stones can be prevented by consuming large amounts of water.

Engage in physical activity with friends

Physical activity may not mean just exercise. Playing sports like tennis, cricket, swimming, running, jogging keeps the mind fit and alert. Rather than spending time watching television or playing video games, children should be encouraged to play with friends. It is also a very good idea to arrange outdoor games or picnics where children get a chance to play and run around with other kids of their age.

Proper sleep

Getting proper rest and sleep is very important for the healthy development of a child. Only a child who has had a fitful sleep and complete rest at night can do well academically and well as in extra-curricular activities. About 9-13 hours of sleep are a must for your kid's physical and mental health.

Here are some great tips for women to stay fit and healthy:

1. A balanced diet is the key to a healthy and energized lifestyle. Find out what a healthy weight is for you according to age and length, make sure to stay in that range. Consult your doctor, dietitian or nutrition counselor to teach you what foods that's good for you and what you should avoid for a healthy diet. If you have to lose weight, have the high calorie- and fat rich foods avoided from your meals. Choose high fiber foods low in fat as fruit, vegetables, chicken, salmon, brown rice and whole grain foods instead of red meat, sugar and fat.

2. Drink enough water. It cleanses the body from impurities, makes it easier to burn fat and helps control hunger. Hydration is necessary for your body and brain to function correctly. Drink at least eight glasses of water each day, and even more if you work out. Carry water with you wherever you go throughout he day. It is also recommended for lactating women to increase water intake to maintain body fluid balance.

3. Take your vitamins and supplements to support normally development of your body. Low levels of certain vitamins, may lead to deficiency disease. Vitamin E strengthens your immune system. In addition, said vitamin E be great if you want to avoid wrinkles. Omega-3, omega-6, zinc and vitamin A are also good for healthy skin. Do not forget your calcium supplements. An adequate calcium intake is good for women of all ages. This has been proven to prevent having cramps and Pre-menstrual(PMS) symptoms. It also prevents osteoporosis especially for women in menopause. Women who undergo menopausal period should take Vitamin E-400 because it suppresses hot flashes and night sweats.

4. Quit smoking! Smoking harms almost every organ of the body. It is responsible for nearly all lung cancer deaths, heart and vessel diseases and stroke. Recent studies have shown that smokers are more likely to become ill than non-smokers. Women who smoke are also at high risk of developing breast cancer. Also make sure to limit your alcohol intake. Pregnant women should definitely avoid smoking, as this will affect the child's health.

5. Be active. Make sure exercise is part of your daily routine. Take a walk after work, use the stairs instead of elevator or play with your kids at home. Exercising at home is a good alternative especially when you do not have time to go to the gym and want keep fit or lose weight. Yoga and Pilates are just a few of the many effective exercises you easily can do at home. Regular exercise reduces risk of cardiovascular disease.

6. Avoid stress. Many women are way too stressed out. It is known that many diseases are caused by too much stress. Take some time to relax as often as you can. Read a good book, socializing with friends and participate in any sport or pamper yourself by going to parlors. Make sure to get enough sleep, 7-8 hours per night for maximum energy, optimal health and effective weight loss.

7. Protect your skin from harmful sun rays. Wear sunscreen and/or a hat when under the sun to protect your skin. Too much sun is bad for your skin. The skin is prone to develop cancer when exposed to too much sunlight, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Too much direct sunlight also increases the skin cell aging, which in turn leads to wrinkles.

Food must be cooked well. Healthy cooking involves heating foods until they are ready for consumption. There are many people who dont know how to cook properly. Everyone knows about good food and junk food. Good food has many positive effects to a persons body and health. Good food can be easily digested and produce energy for the body. Examples of good foods are whole grains, fruits and vegetables. These foods can affect a persons skin condition. Healthy skin means healthy food.

Obesity is a common condition in todays world. There are many obese people living out there. Fast food obesity involves consumption of fast foods such as fries or crisps. Fast foods are not recommended for consumption because of the negative impacts on a persons health. Obesity can be avoided once people begin to have a healthy diet. In order for a person to have a healthy skin, taking a lot of water is essential.
